As per our [virtual] conversation last, we are going to go inside the studio of blacksnow for a second.. with one of the garments from the BlackSnow Vol.I.

Actually, we’re gonna start with a treat- we’re going to cover the conceptuals behind the iconic ‘Falcons’.

At BlackSnow Vol. 1, Opie the SnowQueen wanted a sort of roving art installation to break the ice before the actual show. Together, we chose four absolute badass female models to be what would become the Falcons. Three would be the roving art, and the fourth would be the Mama.. [ the model we chose for the mama actually was a mama in truth- she was very pregnant when she walked down our runway. YES! ]

The ‘Falcons’ were inspired by an ancient method of hunting called falconry. Hunters employ falcons and/or other strong, fast, raptors to hunt game. The birds are fitted with a specially designed hood that covers their eyes until precisely the moment the hunters wish them to see their intended quarry. The hoods aide the birds in maintaining calm as well as preventing them from focusing on any other potential prey aside from the intended quarry of the hunter.

Creating falcon hoods is actually regarded as a cherished artform in a great many countries and cultures around the world. There are a myriad of distinctive hood styles representative of the various cultural traditions from which they sprang.

Snow saw these and was immediately like, ‘I’m going to make falcon hoods for humans’.   She wanted em to look like a gang of  badass, biker’esque chicks wit leather and jewelry and don’tfuckwithme written all over their everything.

That’s exactly what she did. She modified the pattern of an actual falcon hood she downloaded from the net. She had to experiment with a few different thicknesses of leather before ultimately settling on a medium weight, stiff leather. She whip-stitched the pieces by hand [ and surprised herself by really enjoying the process ], ending up with a series of hoods that became the iconic center pieces of BlackSnow Vol. 1. With the addition of two major ensembles crowned by the hoods, the grand total was six.

But, of those six, only the original four, including the mama, are considered ‘The Falcons’. She outfitted them in heavily seamed and detailed leather pants, loaded their necks with jewelry and a single piece of leather with multiple horizontal slits as a partial covering for their breasts.. [ With the exception of one in particular who exhibited a complete disdain for modesty when it came to her breasts ]. She topped the hoods with different combinations of feathers and voila!  The soon to be infamous- FALCONS

It was amaaaaazing.

A truly remarkable and life-changing experience for us. We’ve already sent several shoutouts of the highest caliber to all those involved but there will be a ridiculous amount of gratitude always in the wings from the both of us as a result of that first show and what it put into motion. This post is to let you all know that we will no longer continue to be remiss when it comes to keeping you, our people, in the loop and aware of what’s happening in our world. There are a great many projects, large and not-so that are in the works, and we are SO excited to be able to bring them to you as they develop.

That said, stay tuned for the first of several installments from our ‘Studio’ category, where we will bring to you some of the process behind the makings and workings of several of the lunatic/wonderful garments you see on our site.

And as always, thank you to all of you for following us, supporting us, and being inspired by us. We are extremely grateful and we will continue to repay your support and interest

ps. for those of you who haven’t visited the site lately, here’s a taste of what went down.. As a result of professional differences, we will not be pursuing a relationship with the gentleman who shot this lovely video for us, however, we do have this morsel with which to tantalize…

will we be done in time? done? I wouldn’t necessarily use the word.. done. ready enough for the shoot? yes. we will be ready enough to kick elephant ass for the shoot. but done?
not so much.. whatever! it’s working! WE’RE working.. and it’s gonna keep getting BETTER and BETTER. we met with this HEEEELLLA nice cat today, Blue Bayer ( his etsy ) ; let us raid his stocks of jewelry for anything we wanted to use for the show on loan. SOOOO happy yes? YES! this is getting more and more exciting as the time draws near. both of us keep wakin up thinking about stuff; some outfit for the show; some way of arranging a model’s hair. I keep goin delerious and stitchin in my dreams. THAT sucks. don’t like it AT ALL.. buuuut, this is the bed we have made and we must lay in it.

oh boy..

I wanted to make sure we are documenting this entire process in several different ways because THESE are the days we are going to look back on as the launch; the springboard into the orbit we’ll be looking back from. There are many turning points in life. Some of them one can only recognize in hindsight. Some, like this one, are evident in the moment, and it is these that for me are the most poignant because they allow a glimpse into the future. Even more than a glimpse, they allow prediction of the future; metaphysical augury. And if one has the gumption to stand at the edge of the storm cloud and endeavor to call the lightening, the very brashness of the act itself may find answer where there would have been none for those who dared not the feat.

what’s that you say? what else is going on and up and moving through the world of BlackSnow? SO grateful you asked!

WELL.. we’re gearing up [ translation: stiching our ASSES off ] for our photo shoot with BADASS photographer Brion Topolski who’s comin in all the way from sunny Los Angeles Cali-fuggn-fornia to visit his not inconsiderable talents onto our decked out visions of otherworldliness. We’ve got most of our models locked in, and we were put onto a FAbulous makeup artist as well resident here in the Brooklyn area, Risha Rox. This is gonna be SOO much fun! Now all we have to do is finish EVERY thing we want photographed [ which is pretty much everything in the flippin show ] by the next week thursday when he flies in. … uhh… yeah.
so we’ll let you know how that goes shall we children? [ gulp ]
also.. Snow has been working on the single SEXIEST, most RIDICULOUS outfit I have yet to see her create.. I mean seriously.. it’s kinna nutbutters wit a two-bit of half cherrygrape stuff on top. bananas. INSANE.
okay, that’s enough.. [when she reads this she's going to shoot me for hyping the piece up so much, but DAMMIT it's all TRUE! I wouldn't lie about such things; the truth is so much more.. true. ]
our apartment is becoming an enclave of alien threads, and our rafters are subbing for the non-existent closet space. there’s thread and fabric scraps all over the floor, and two semi-burnt out, completely dazedly happy, half delerious artists working damn near every waking moment on bringing YOU, our people, one of the sickest shows we can possibly muster.
